Controversial, harrowing and provocative – the reputation of Howard Barker’s Gertrude – The Cry precedes its journey to Brighton’s 88 London Road next week. Known as the enfant terrible of contemporary British theatre, the prolific Brighton playwright joins forces on this occasion with Brief Hiatus, a new Brighton theatre company intent on bringing diverse and challenging works to the stage.
The ‘Gertrude’ of the play is none other than the mother of The Dane herself – one of Shakespeare’s many female characters whose depths remain – perhaps permanently – elusive. Barker’s provocative retelling of Hamlet is unafraid to plunge deeply into the cycle of murder, destruction and passion in pursuit of Gertrude’s power – the play’s eponymous ‘cry’. ‘Magnificently shameless’ (The Guardian), and containing nudity, strong language and scenes of a sexual nature; this particular reworking of Shakespeare is sure to take you further down the rabbit hole…
Gertrude – The Cry takes place at 88 London Road (formerly The Emporium) from Wednesday 30th March to Saturday 2nd April at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10 – for more information or to book, click here.
