One of the most influential British theatre figures of the past 40 years is collaborating with a man likely to be one of the most influential of the next 40 in the National Theatre’s upcoming production, Red Barn.
David Hare – winner of almost every stage award going, including a Bafta for his 1979 play for Licking Hitler and an Olivier in 1990 for Racing Demon – will work with wunderkind director Robert Icke – winner of an Oliver for last year’s Oresteia and named one of The Stage‘s 100 most influential people in British theatre before he’d turned 30 – on an adaptation of Georges Simenon’s novel La Main.
A psychological thriller set in a New England farmhouse, it follows two couples struggling home from a party through deep snow. Starring Mark Strong – winner of an Oliver for his portrayal of Eddie Carbone in A View from the Bridge – and Eddie Carbone in A View from the Bridge for which he won the Olivier Award for Best Actor – and Emmy/Tony nominee Hope Davis, here making her UK stage debut, the play is running in the National’s Lyttelton Theatre until 17 January.
