The Amina Khayyam Dance Co reimagines Federico Garcia Lorca’s Yerma through the medium of dance.
One of Lorca’s most famous works, Yerma is the tragic tale of a loveless and childless marriage set against the backdrop of patriarchal rural Spain in the 19th century, where failure to bear children was socially ruinous for a woman. Tormented by her longing for motherhood, the play’s namesake and protagonist, Yerma, is driven to commit a violent and irrevocable crime, ultimately destroying her only hope of happiness.
Amina Khayyam works through the neoclassical dance form Kathak, passed down through generations from ancient India’s nomadic bards. Paired with live music performed by world renowned musicians, it is a medium perfectly suited to the lyricism of Lorca’s play.
Merging Kathak with theatre, live art and technology, The Amina Khayyam Dance Co transports Yerma into the modern world, bringing to light the fact that women in Britain and Europe’s new and marginalised communities still face similar pressures today.
