Wild Tales at HEART

Wild Tales is one of those films that resonates with you for weeks afterwards and will have you leaving the cinema with that ‘what did I just watch’ feeling. Perhaps it is the dark yet comic and scarily relate-able narrative of loss of control that leaves you feeling this way as each of the six short stories sees it’s protagonists descend into the most unbelievable situations. The apocalyptic style narrative explores how the pressures and demands of modern life lead to stress and depression and what the most dramatic and terrifyingly real consequences of this can be.

It’s a strangely addictive film and definitely one that benefits from a second viewing in order to fully catch the brilliance and genius of director Damian Szifron. As you are thrown from one story to the next it is easy to miss how they all work together to create an underlying narrative. The action is fast paced, with each story starting with a relatively mundane and strangely peaceful scene that soon descends into total chaos. Making you think of the consequences of every action, Wild Tales leaves you with the feeling that nothing is stable and secure and that your whole world can collapse around you at any moment. Having said that, the film ends on a strangely optimistic note and the dark humour that runs throughout will ensure you don’t leave the cinema in total despair.

Seeing this at the cinema is a must and with standard tickets costing just £6 at the Headingly Enterprise and Arts Centre (HEART), it’s not worth missing out on this one. For more info visit the HEART website here and watch the Wild Tales trailer here.
