Not exactly Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street but rather The Barber of Seville is a well regarded opera and comic masterpiece by famed composer Gioachino Rossini.

It arrives as a four day showcase in the huge Bord Gais Energy Theatre, a place purposely built for such epic performances.

The story follows the young and beautiful Rosina, held captive by the elderly Dr Bartolo who plans to marry her when she comes of age. Rosina, however, is in love with a mysterious young man, who turns out to be Count Almaviva, who has been serenading her from the street below her balcony. Count Almaviva must seek the help of Figaro the barber, in order to break in to Bartolo’s house. And in doing so, series of hilarious misunderstandings, improbable disguises and quick-witted double crossing is set in motion.

The Barber of Seville at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre, Grand Canal Square, Dublin 2, 20-23/04, from 7.30pm.
