Niall Breslin, or Bressie, has seemingly done it all. He played rugby at the top level. And football. He was the frontman for the band The Blizzards and had a successful stint as a solo artist afterwards. Recently he has found his form again as a judge on The Voice and perhaps most importantly, he published a book on mental health called Me and My Mate Jeffrey.
Irish men, or men in general, don’t really discuss mental health issues and there has always been a stigma attached when it comes to looking for help and speaking out honestly. Bressie’s book drew from his own experiences – panic attacks, endless anxiety, self harm. And as much as I hate his music, it’s refreshing to see a male public figure addressing these issues openly and frankly.
Bressie will be discussing his life, his health and more with writer/journalist Roisin Ingle.
Smock Alley Theatre, 6/7 Exchange Street Lower, Dublin 8, 23rd of May, from 6pm.
