Square Peg Theatre present a chilling new production of Jean Genet’s radical play The Maids, this Thursday 26th May at the Carriageworks Theatre in Leeds. From a company with such a reputation for creating boldly physical and beautiful theatre, their interpretation of this dark and chilling narrative of resentment, revenge and murder is set to be scintillating.
In a story which is loosely based on the real-life story of the Papin sisters; two domestic servants who murder their employer’s wife and daughter in an act of bloody rebellion, Genet explores themes of desire, dissatisfaction and revenge. Square Peg Theatre believe that there is strong metaphor for modern life to be explored within this story – the idea of dissatisfaction with your place in modern society and the constant want for “something more.”
For an excellent exploration of the dangers of desire and dissatisfaction within the modern psyche, don’t miss this production of The Maids.
