Beethoven and Stalingrad don’t seem like the two most compatible subject – the former producing some of the most incredible music ever composed, whilst the latter saw some of the most horrific war conditions ever made.

The new play Beethoven in Stalingrad is based on letters that were confiscated and hidden away by the Nazi regime. Around Christmas 1942, the German soldiers were given one last opportunity to write home. Their powerful testimonies are here intertwined with a live remix of Beethoven’s music.

Scottish violinist Ian Peaston unravels and remixes the Appassionata in distorted electronic strands that mirror the narratives of real soldiers’ letters from Stalingrad, adapted and performed by the Swedish actor Jesper Arin.

Beethoven in S. will be playing at the Old Joint Stock, 4 Temple Row West, from the 30th to the 31st March from 19:30.
