Eve Ensler is a human rights activist and the Tony Award winning author of The Vagina Monologues. A theatrical piece that has received worldwide critical acclaim and been generally acknowledged and accepted as one of the most important pieces of recent political theater and a huge step towards understanding the feminine experience. In 2015 she once again received critical acclaim for Avocado, a commission for The West Yorkshire Playhouse which will now be revisited alongside Pomegranate and Coconut to compromise The Fruit Trilogy.
Directed by Mark Rosenblatt, The Fruit Trilogy will be performed by Amelia Donkor and Carla Harrison-Hodge and will consist of three short plays that explore the female experience of trafficking, sexual abuse, refugee life and body image. All subjects in which women are hugely under represented and their experiences and voices in these very real and current situations are frequently silenced.
The three plays work beautifully with each other. Pomegranate is a snapshot of a regular working day in a brothel, Avocado follows the funny, shocking and beautiful story of a young woman’s journey towards freedom and Coconut sees a female survivor begin to own and enjoy her body.
